KEEP PUNCHING
I recently had an email sent to me about an article I had recently written for THE
ACADIAN and this young lady named Brenda that said, "I read all of your articles
in The Acadian Lafayette and St. Landry and find them to be quite inspiring but
how do I get motivated and stay motivated?"with Kerry Daigle HEY KERRY! How Do I Stay Motivated in the New Year? I hear that question quite a bit in my travels doing speaking engagements and trainings with my company and will attempt to answer the question and be as specific as I can. Keep in mind that 'staying motivated' can be a difficult task at first, however, once you make positive changes in your life.many great things begin to happen. It all starts with two things! ATTITUDE and ACTION!
First thing to do is to invest in yourself by purchasing audiobooks and text books on
personal development. I strongly believe a person should spend a minimum of 3% to 5% of their gross monthly income on material that will assist them in becoming a better
and stronger more positive person. Make your automobile a 'rolling university'...by
listening to 'inspirational' messages daily. Secondly, pick up this newspaper every
month and pick up on one or two points that may possibly assist you in your goals of
becoming a better more positive person. Some of the books and tapes I recommend are anything by motivational speaker Les Brown, from 'The Courage to Live Your Dreams' tapes series to his books. Also, I highly recommend "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill either in CD or book form and "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. There are many more suggestions we can give you. You will be able to receive more information and recommendations at our website www.keeppunching.com. If you constantly feed yourself positive thoughts they will be planted into your mind and become part of who you are. You can either feed your mind 'positive thoughts' or 'negative thoughts' ! You have complete control of that decision. That is going to be your choice. What happens with your day and how you respond to situations will determine the outcome of your day. My philosophy is simple: Respond..to situations...DON'T REACT. There is a huge difference. Don't get caught up with an emotional or 'negative' answer..... Think, then respond..or say, "I don't know about that..I'll get back to you later"! Paw Paw Daigle always said that it is always best sometimes to 'sleep' on an answer before answering emotionally immediately that may haunt you for the rest of your life. Andrew Carnegie wrote, " The man who acquires the ability to take full possession of his own mind may take possession of anything else to which he is justly entitled". The next thing to do is to set some goals and write them down. Set long term goals and then break them down into years, months, weeks, days, and parts of days. Be specific and devise a plan on how you are going to reach them. Don't overwhelm yourself. I believe in 'whelming' .Put down realistic goals that you can reach but goals that you will have to put together some effort to reach them. Remember, a home is built a 'brick' at a time or a 'board' at a time. You don't build the roof first, do you? You have to make plans or 'goals' before starting...and it starts one day at a time. Be patient and fair to yourself. Completing small goals regularly starts to bring you to your larger goal in sight. Always carry a day planner with you everyday no matter what kind of work you do. If your work is physical work keep the planner in the car and make sure you have your daily accomplishments listed and cross them out as you continue to move forward with setting your goals. You don't need a very expensive planner but it is important you have one. In developing a positive new lifestyle always talk to yourself in a positive voice. When you think of 'negative' thoughts use the word 'CANCEL' and tell yourself to cancel those negative thoughts. You will eventually train yourself to not even have those enter your mind for very long. Never think you don't have the talent or ability to succeed and move forward. Education shouldn't be a factor and neither should your background. You can always acquire education on different levels along the way, whether it's a formal education or a self-education depending on your goals. The only thing that counts is your attitude towards yourself. Every individual has a 'gift' or 'talent' and needs to utilize that gift or talent to their fullest potential. If you don't believe in yourself how are you going to have someone else believe in you? It is about taking action and changing things that make you unhappy. I grew up in a shotgun home with no heat, air conditioning, or hot running water and without any luxuries such as television and or a refrigerator. My grandparents, Maw Maw and Paw Paw Daigle, who raised me, did not have an education and were illiterate. They couldn't read or write and they couldn't speak English. They lived on state assistance. My father, who lived with us, had glaucoma and was legally blind. I only had a high school education. I could have used every excuse in the world as to 'why' I couldn't succeed. There are times you will need to dig down deep in your soul and heart when people are telling you that you don't have any skills or talents. You will need to use every bit of intestinal fortitude to say, "YES, I CAN...AND YES, I WILL DO THE THINGS NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS." Find a mentor that is positive and successful and meet with them at least once a month and 'listen' to what they have to say...watch their actions...read the books they read...Ask them the questions that may give you the 'desire' to move forward when you hear the answers.... have mentors in authors and their books and CD's such as Les Brown, Zig Ziglar, Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, Norman Vincent Peale, Og Mandino, Bob Burg, among many others. Because Maw Maw and Paw Paw Daigle instilled in me that you have to dream big I went on in my early twenties and became involved in my dream of promoting professional boxing and managing professional fighters and doing business with national and international television executives across the world. I only had a high school education..Did that stop me? Did my background stop me? In fact, my background motivated me to move forward...and Maw Maw and Paw Paw Daigle instilled in me "the power of the dream". Be enthusiastic, smile regularly and watch your personality become contagious. And continue educating yourself with books and audio material. Jim Rohn says this best "Educate then motivate" which means listen to the audios and read the book and work on getting an attitude adjustment FIRST...then turn on your enthusiasm....otherwise you have a "motivated idiot. Again, Educate...then motivate!! That really made sense to me! Last but not least....... be responsible for yourself. Make good choices. Some people want to change the world and that's okay but let's be realistic. You may not be able to change the world, however you can change 'your personal world' by making good choices such as what you read..what you watch on television or listen to on the radio.....people whom you choose to associate with along with thoughts you choose to accept or reject. Don't get caught up in doing things others do that may be 'negative' for you 'later in life just to be part of a crowd! Have some integrity and choose to be different. After all, different people compromise 5% of the population of the United States..those 5% percenters of 'different people' are the highly successful..the other 95% choose to be 'average'..SAD BUT TRUE STATISTIC. Remember if you want to fly with the eagles you can't wade in a pool quacking with the ducks. Here is a thought for the day that came from Maw Maw Daigle; "You have the power to dream and dream big. You can do things you never thought you could do if you believe in your dream. There are no limits to your accomplishments except the limits you set in your own mind." Thanks Maw Maw!! I know you're up there reading a copy of this article in THE ACADIAN! Spread the word for us, will you? Keep Punching! Kerry |
