THE VALUE OF ONE HOUR A DAY

When I was in my early twenties one of my mentors showed me something that literally changed my life and my ability to focus on the big prize in business and my personal life. It was something literally very simple but profoundly powerful. He asked me what I thought about the value of 'one hour'. At that time in my life I really didn't understand where he was going with the question or what he meant. He then went on to teach me one of the most valuable lessons I have ever learned, a lesson that you will never learn at Harvard or Yale but yet can change the whole landscape in your destination to the successful moments in your life. After all, Paw Paw Daigle knew exactly how powerful these steps were. He should know. He had 60 plus years of life's experiences.

Paw Paw advised me, "If you invest one hour each and every day in understanding personal growth and development and your environment (the people you spend time with who become mentors of yours) learning a skill that can propel you forward in life, you will accumulate nine 40 hour weeks over the course of a year!" Although Paw Paw couldn't read or write he was good with numbers.

Nine 40 hour weeks? As I said, Paw Paw was good with numbers but that seemed impossible until I did the math. Three hundred sixty five days a year times one hour a day....Wow! He was right! That came out to nine 40 hour weeks with a little time to spare! I was blown away by this simple lesson.

He then added to the conversation by saying, "Kerry, do you realize how good you could get at something if you spent that one hour a day wisely?" At this time I don't think I have to convince you that he was absolutely right. I responded to him in a very enthusiastic way, "Yes, I do see what you mean now, Paw Paw. I could really grow and learn so much and expand in areas where I want to be productive."

In conclusion he asked this question, "In the course of five years how much time would you invest in yourself towards whatever goals and dreams you may have, Kerry, with that 'one hour a day'?" Again, I did the numbers! I was stunned. I answered Paw Paw with, "It's a total of 1825 hours!" He didn't have to say much more. I was getting an education that literally changed my thinking and gave me the vision to dream big.

Think about what Paw Paw taught me! Imagine how good you could become at anything 'part-time' if you focused on that 'one hour a day' for the next year! Think about how physically fit you could get, how you could expand your communication with your family, how you could grow personally by giving that time to reading the right personal development books, and how much more money you could earn by applying yourself in areas that could expand your personal and financial life!

I learned that 'one hour a day' is a very tiny price to pay to give you that incredible edge you need to follow your dreams. As Paw Paw Daigle would tell me, "Always remember, Kerry, that dreams can become fairy tales and then miracles do happen." He concluded, "God gave us the ability to dream and I really believe He wanted us to dream big!"

That incredible hour! The value of time spent wisely. The strength of looking forward and having a plan. I learned all those lessons from Paw Paw that day and still carry those lessons with me and teach others the power of that 'one hour'.

Everyday I manage to set aside my hour to read personal development books or listen to CD's and audios written by motivational speakers who teach discipline, people skills, positive thinking and the power behind learning these skills. These things are the exercise for my mind to keep it sharp and always on the positive side understanding that good things come with challenges. We just have to be mentally fit to handle those challenges. No challenges....no growth!

I would urge you to pass this information on to a friend that could use the lesson of the value of that hour or for yourself to find that one area in your life that you want to improve on and commit to in the next 90 days. You see, after 90 days, this process will become a 'habit'. Habits then become a way of life. You will either have good habits or bad habits. That is a choice and a decision only you will make.

I can promise you that creating these good habits will be worth your time. After all, isn't life short? I think it is. Maw Maw and Paw Paw Daigle left me many years ago and too early in my life but I'm certain God is sitting with them right now 'thanking them' for giving these "life lessons" to others while they were on Earth. Paw Paw and Maw Maw will always live in my heart with the great lessons they've taught me. Paw Paw left me with these words, "Go forward and teach these lessons to those you care about. Leave a legacy." He did. Now, it's your turn.
