KEEP PUNCHING
with Kerry Daigle "THE CANDYMAN SPEAKS OUT" After a controversial loss to Martin Verdin on February 4th at the Blackham Coliseum, Blake Prevost, better known as "The Candyman" speaks out. Scores of fight fans from across Acadiana wrote letters to editors of several newspapers to display their dissatisfaction with two of the judges that night, Kenny Licata and Kenny Santies. The website, www.keeppunching.com , has a guestbook of several fight fans and their opinions of what transpired. Will "The Candyman" bounce back? Is there a re-match? Is "The Candyman" bitter? We were able to catch up with Blake Prevost and get his thoughts on several subjects. As usual, he was most gracious and very professional in giving his thoughts. I am certain we have not seen the last of Blake "The Candyman" Prevost.
LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE MARINES Prevost: I joined the Marines when I was 19 and and stayed 4 years. I was stationed in Camp Pendleton, California for one year in Infantry. I later made the Marine Corps boxing team in Camp LeJeune, North Carolina for 3 years becoming the U.S. Marine Corps 2002 and 2003 Middleweight Champion and in 2004 was their Heavyweight Champion totaling 232 amateur fights. It was a good life and I really liked it. Upon my discharge I turned professional and everything is going well so far. OCCUPATION WHILE FIGHTING Prevost: I am working at Copeland's Restaurant in Lafayette, Louisiana as an apprentice in the kitchen learning all the aspects of cooking for Copelands. It is a great atmosphere and the manager, Larry Ordoyne, works with my boxing schedule. I couldn't ask for anything better. I really like it. PROFESSIONAL BOXING DEBUT Prevost: I was so excited about turning professional. I've wanted to turn pro since the age of 8. This was and still is a life long dream. The Paragon Casino and Resort in Marksville, Louisiana arranged my professional boxing debut and it reminded me of an Olympian turning professional. I got lots of attention. I will always be grateful to the media, The Paragon, and all the people involved in making my dream come true. JOHN STUTES, SR Prevost: What can I 'not' say about Mr. Stutes? He is an awesome trainer. He's forgotten more about boxing than most trainers know. He is a great confidence builder in the corner. I started boxing with him before fighting with the Marines. He is someone you can totally trust. He called the Marines boxing coach for them to pay attention to me when I enlisted. From there things started working out really well for me. LIVING BACK AT HOME IN LAWTELL, LA Prevost: Well, there is no place like home! I saw the U.S. as a Marine but Lawtell, Louisiana is who I am and where I belong. Family and friends close to me mean a lot. I fight as much for them as I do for myself. I want to bring back a world championship to those that support me. FAMILY SUPPORT Prevost: A great deal of who I am and where I am is because of them. TRAINING IN THE HOUSTON TRAINING CAMPS Prevost: That is another addition to the Keeppunching family of boxers. Termite Watkins' experience is extraordinary! It is a position I never thought I would be in this early. Reggie Johnson is there working and I am learning from him. I spar in a big time gym with all world class boxers. You can't help but get better. TERMITE WATKINS Prevost: Termite coached the Iraqi boxing team and brought them to the Olympics. He was a great fighter in his day and fought Saoul Mamby for the world title in a 15 round fight at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas on the undercard of Larry Holmes vs Muhammad Ali. Termite is a great teacher and works close with our other family of trainers like John Stutes, Sr. REGGIE JOHNSON Prevost: Reggie is totally awesome! He has been scheduled in 25 twelve round fights and is a two time world champion, once at middleweight and once at light-heavyweight and is now a member of the Keeppunching Team of boxers. Reggie doesn't look at me like I am beneath him and treats me equally. I don't feel like a sparring partner but more as a student. I am learning so much. I believe Reggie will become a world champion again if given the opportunity. TOUGHEST FIGHT AS AMATEUR Prevost: I would have to say Jermain Taylor, the now undisputed middleweight champion of the world. I fought him in Little Rock, Arkansas which is his hometown in 1999. The winner went to the Golden Gloves Nationals to qualify for the Olympic Trails. It was a close fight but I thought he won. He deserves to be where he is. I would really like to fight him again as a professional. TOUGHEST FIGHT AS A PROFESSIONAL Prevost: That is an easy one. I would have to say Anthony Greeley. He doesn't have a great record right now but was exceptionally well experienced at the time I fought him. He had been in the ring with some big names and had 17 pro fights under his belt. That was only my 2nd professional fight. We fought to a draw in Shreveport, Louisiana. I really learned a lot in that fight. THE ONLY LOSS TO MARTIN VERDIN Prevost: I don't really consider the fight with Verdin a loss. I was in complete control over 6 rounds. He will have to fight me again at some time in the future and we won't need those judges helping. He better bring his 'A' game to the next fight because I will not leave the decision up to the judges next time. "He can run..but he can't hide"..I'm generally well mannered; however, should Verdin decide to fight me again I am throwing everything out the window. IT'S WAR!! The crowd knows I won..the trainers in his corner know I won.and most of all the judges know I won. If he doesn't fight me again, I can really understand his reasoning because it will be suicide for his career. The first fight 'shame on the two judges'.the second time 'shame on me'. I can bring my game up 2 to 3 levels.Verdin can't. I totally outclassed him and owned the real estate in that ring. I boxed him when I wanted to..hit him to body over and over when I wanted to.pushed him back when I wanted to.when my back was on the ropes I spun him around..I literally controlled the fight and hit him 3 to 1. I bought 50 DVDs of the fight and invite anyone to look at the fight and judge it themselves. I'll even give them a scorecard. Without any experience as a judge, I feel anyone can judge that fight better than the two judges did that night. You know what's funny? The 3rd judge from north Louisiana had me winning all 6 rounds. Realistically, I don't think Verdin or his managers will ever want me to fight Verdin again. It will be the end of his career. He and his managers know it. He needs to keep running. ![]()
YOUR FUTURE Prevost: I will be light-heavyweight champion of the world!! Once I retire I want to give back to other boxers as a trainer and manager. I've got the greatest mentors in the world. I am learning my trade everyday with the best and most experienced people around. KEEPPUNCHING STABLE Prevost: The team is incredible. The acronym for TEAM is Together Everyone Achieves More. I urge everyone to go to our website at www.keeppunching.com. Our webmaster, Stephen Gauthier, is designing a section for the entire stable. This guy does an incredible job. We've got boxers like Bobby Aucoin, Reggie Johnson, Jeremy Duplechain, Daniel Garcia, Skip Scott and all the great trainers with John Stutes, Sr., Termite Watkins, Charles Duplechain, David Nelams, and Aaron Snowell advising us. Aaron had 23 world champions. Our conditioning and nutritional experts are Dr. Eric Prather, Jack Medina, and Travis Broussard. The list is endless. Reggie Johnson, who has won 2 world titles and has fought all the major names across the globe has been to the top of the mountain and with your help, Kerry, we can all reach the promised land with both you and Reggie's experience, motivation, and inspiration. FIGHTERS YOU WOULD LIKE TO FIGHT Prevost: I have only 9 professional fights (7 wins-1 loss-1 draw-4 knockouts) so at this point in my career I would like to fight Will McIntyre, Daniel Judah, Martin Verdin and George Kalid Jones. Realistically, I need about 15 fights to make a move to the top of the division and then I will fight anyone, anywhere. I could go down to super-middleweight or stay at light-heavyweight for a title shot. SIGNIFICANT OTHER Prevost: (Laughing).I just knew you were going there! I don't really have one. I am so focused on my career. They would have to get past my two sisters, my trainers, and you, my agent..so I guess that is almost as tough as being a professional fighter. Then the poor girl would have to learn to live with me. That would be the toughest thing. So, I guess I'll be single for a while! CLOSING Prevost: I have to say 'thanks' to all members of the media who cover all my fights and the interviews that are given to me. With their help and the hand of God I feel good things are coming up soon. Next I have to say I love my fans. They are part of my team. I need them just as much as anything else and I appreciate them. Once I win that world title it won't be only for me andThe Keeppunching Team but for all the fans also. It will be their title too! Last but not least I want to thank the ladies at THE ACADIAN who have been so kind to me to offer this space for the interview and urge all of Acadiana to support their newspaper and the good news they bring to the area.
