Achieving Success Vs. Living In Mediocrity

Mark Twain wrote, "I never let my schooling interfere with my education."

Maw Maw Daigle said, "A person who doesn't read books is no better off than a person who can't read."

Paw Paw Daigle was quoted as saying, "It is the reading and learning that you do after your graduation from school that really helps you achieve success....if not, then you only know what everyone else does."

In my recent trip to Little Rock, Arkansas one of my peers in the boxing industry asked me what he could do for himself in reference to self-improvement and personal development and that he was a hard worker in his profession..however, he was weak in developing himself personally and was reaching a time in his life where he wanted to retire but couldn't. He asked, "Why is it some of my peers and friends who don't work as 'hard' as I do achieve success and yet success has a history of avoiding me?"

That is a difficult question to answer unless you understand the fundamentals of working 'smart' vs working 'hard'. One book I wholly recommend for everyone to read is RICH DAD, POOR DAD by Robert Kiyosaki for a start, however, even before that everyone needs lessons on personal development and self-improvement. I will give you a few ideas that worked for me that I learned from several of my mentors.

* Work harder on yourself than you do on your job. In other words continue to grow and realize YOU are your most valuable asset. Do not stop growing and learning. Find a mentor you respect in different areas of your life that you want to excel in and watch what they do....and learn from them.

* Go to seminars and workshops on your 'off' time. Choose these carefully and attend the sessions given by people that have achieved success and have 'walked the walk' and are not just 'talking the talk'. These sessions are better than any college course you would take which teaches 'theoretical environments' but very little 'hands-on practical experience'. This is not to say a college education is not helpful or good. I do not want anyone to misunderstand me; however, most college courses teach us how to get a 'job'.while these courses teach us entrepreneurial skills. Big difference.

* Remember that one day you are the student and the next day you may be the teacher. Always remember that once you become the teacher you must then move immediately to becoming a 'student' again so you can continue learning and growing.

* Associate yourself with positive people. Learn from them and emulate them. Positive people will encourage you to become a success. Negative people will drag you down. Get the negative people out of your life. Ignore them. As Paw Paw Daigle taught me.."Hang around a shoplifter long enough and you will learn how to shoplift...hang around successful people long enough and you will learn how to be successful. The choice is yours." Great advice.

* Spend 2% to 5% of your gross monthly income on positive reading material, CD's, DVD's. Never miss a month. Don't you think you are worth it?

* Cut out more television. The average adult spends a minimum of three hours a day watching television. At least cut out half of that time to read. Reading is to your mind what exercising is to your heart. Your mind, once you expand it, will never return to its original size. Did you know that 60% of Americans never read a non-fiction book after high school? It is no wonder why most Americans work until 65 without any financial success of any real mention. The secret here, however, is to read the 'right' books. Books that can teach you 'how' to become successful...personal development and positive thinking material.

* Listen to CD's of the same when you are driving. Make your car a 'rolling university'. The average person puts 15,000 miles a year in their cars. Average speed is 40 mph which means a person spends almost 400 hours a year in their automobile 'on the average'. I say that is plenty of time to learn while driving.

* Improve your vocabulary. Look at a dictionary once a week and find a 'new' word you would like to use that week..and use it regularly. Exercise your mind.

Many people will discard these lessons in personal improvement and will say 'successful' people are just 'lucky'. Please never believe that theory. My take on luck is 'LUCK IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PREPAREDNESS MEETS OPPORTUNITY'.
