'Hello, my good friend!'
CHARLES HUDSON, A TRUE LEADER

The art of leadership can be defined in many different ways. I would like to list a few names of leaders that defined the term 'leadership'.

HARRY TRUMAN: "A leader is a man who has the ability to get other people to do what they don't want to do and like it!"

VINCE LOMBARDI: "Coaches who can outline plays on a blackboard are a dime a dozen. The ones who succeed are those who can get inside their player's and motivate them to win."

DANIEL WEBSTER: "What a man does for others, not what they do for him, gives him immortality and labels him as a leader."

These are some of the best quotes I've seen in reference to 'leadership' however, when it comes to CHARLES HUDSON, the quote that defines Mr. Hudson down to his soul is a quote from none other than TEDDY ROOSEVELT when he stated in a speech he had made as President of the United States which said, "If a man lives a decent life and does his work fairly and squarely so that those dependent upon him and attached to him are better for his having lived, then he is a success." That is who Charles Hudson was..a man who lived a decent life and was the example of the word 'humble', who did his work as a servant to people doing his work fairly and squarely as Teddy Roosevelt said, who made a difference in everyone's life he was attached to, who cared about his fellow man or woman and their successes more than his own successes and who always had the quote and smile when addressing someone by saying, "Hello, my good friend". This was Dr. Charles Hudson, the educator, the teacher, the principal, the city councilman, the State Representative who loved everyone he met. To Dr. Hudson his beliefs were that love was the most important ingredient for success. He exemplified the meaning of life without love as life echoing emptiness. He never let that happen with anyone he encountered or did business with. He loved his fellow man/woman and because of that his life would vibrate warmth and meaning. He was everyone's 'good friend'.

I remember growing up in a shotgun home on the corner of Railroad Avenue and Bertheaud in Opelousas, Louisiana with my illiterate grand-parents. As a teen-ager I had the fortune of living close to Dr. Hudson. His home was just across the railroad tracks on Bertheaud and about two blocks west. Being an educator, Dr. Hudson was someone who really believed that everyone needed to read books by the dozen. I remember his words to me as I struggled through high school working every afternoon and night to provide food for my grandparents because there was not enough income to buy groceries and pay the utility bills. Dr. Hudson would mention Mark Twain's famous words, "Those that don't read books, Kerry, are no better off than those who can't read." That left quite an impression on me as I started reading more and more everyday. We didn't have a television set which was to my advantage so 'books' became my form of entertainment. Books became my education and I will give credit to Dr. Hudson for planting that 'thought' into my mind. I read every book I could on great leaders and entrepreneurs and on positive development and started my first home based business at the tender age of 13. I encountered some tough times along the way and even went bankrupt once causing people to look down upon me.

Dr. Hudson, on the other hand, was always optimistic telling me my failures in life were nothing more than opportunities to 'learn' more. And how right he was as at the age of 42, I had amassed an income that put me in a retirement mode if I chose to be. Today at 51 I am enjoying life to the fullest having traveled across the world and met with some of the most famous people on the globe in authors, athletes, speakers, and entrepreneurs from all walks of life. Dr. Hudson always believed in everything Maw Maw and Paw Paw Daigle said..and that was to 'follow your dreams'.and if you dream big ...your world will be 'big'..but if you dream small your world will be small. Thank you for blessing the words of Maw Maw and Paw Paw Daigle, Dr. Hudson. I will always remember that.

I believe we all need to look for heroes to believe in, someone to rally around, someone like Dr. Hudson. He was a hero to many as well as a true leader. I believe Dr. Hudson made the word 'leadership' an inside job. He taught me that leadership was about each one of us and that we needed to pay the price to 'make a meaningful difference' wherever we go to become a great leader. Dr. Hudson taught me among many other things that leadership is about taking the 'gifts' we have and multiplying them for a purpose greater than self-interest. That is how he ran his district and how he ran his life. That is why he could say without hesitation to everyone.."Hello, my good friend." He meant every word.

Dr. Hudson left us with the ability to understand that each one of us has the potential to lead if you love your friends and enemies alike. Unless we presume that God made a mistake in creating the earths, heavens, and us, we all should have a purpose for living and we are given the opportunity to experience life fully while in the meantime contribute meaningfully to the people around us. This is how Dr. Hudson taught us. He didn't tell us what to do. He showed us by his actions. His privilege was to serve. He never wanted a special title. He never campaigned to be recognized as one of the most prolific leaders in the legislature. He instead led by example and stayed humble day after day.

In the Bible there is a reference to Jesus saying, "The greatest among you will be the servant of all." Dr. Charles Hudson put personal inconvenience aside to experience life as an incredible gift to be shared with others. He gave unconditionally and with no strings attached as a political servant and because of that he taught us that in order to magnify life and the goodness in others you must love everyone unselfishly.

Dr. Hudson, you will remain in my mind, soul, and heart forever and will be my mentor as long as life on this earth is given to me. I thank you for your leadership and most of all your caring. I know you are somewhere speaking to other angels and giving of yourself. You will become a leader of the heavens as you have been on this earth.
To you, I say..always
