LET FRIENDS HAPPEN

by
Kerry Daigle

Less fortunate than most in our neighborhood, I always tried very hard to make friends, a difficult task for me because I suffered from an inferiority complex. We seemed so far behind everyone else financially.
My efforts seldom worked. I tried too hard. One day, after getting quite upset with my failure, Paw-Paw called me to the porch.

“Don’t worry about making friends,” said Paw-Paw Daigle. “Keep good company and seek out quality people. Friends will happen.”

I know some of you may wonder what Paw-Paw meant by not making friends—it may sound cold! However, I would like you to listen to Paw-Paw Daigle’s philosophy.

Paw-Paw was put on this earth to live into his 80s and transfer his “Life’s Experiences” to those smart enough to listen. He didn’t have a B.A., B.S. or Ph.D. behind his name.
His initials were L.E., “life experiences,” and he could deliver his message better than any person alive.
He taught us to pay the price for success.
He reminded us that problems were only obstacles that created opportunities to test us, to see what we were really made of.

Paw-Paw always said:
“If you keep good company, good company will follow you with quality people.”
Paw-Paw taught me to surround myself with people who enrich and empower me, people who enable me to transcend limitations and grow personally in a positive direction.
These people—because of their attitudes in life--bring strength in times of weakness, lift the spirit up instead of down.
Most of us can acknowledge the fact that we are affected positively or negatively by the people we spend time with?

Think about it!
Kids affect parents, parents affect kids. Spouses affect each other.
The people we work with affect us negatively or positively, as do our friends, family and neighbors.
There are times when we have little control over who we spend our time with, especially at work. Seek someone at work that shares your vision for success.
Become a team member with the successful people and help each other reach your full potential. You cannot make it alone in your journey to success.
You don’t need someone to pull you down. Be selective.
Let family members know of your new way of thinking, that speaking negatively about others or life in general has no place in your vocabulary.
Tell them you love them. Let them know you are on a new path for success for you and your family.
You can have absolute control over your way of thinking!

Let’s talk about friends.
As mentioned earlier, Paw-Paw always said:
“Don’t worry about making friends, go on with your life.”
To which he added:
“You don’t make friends … friends will happen!”

By being who you are, true friends will surface, with good solid values, positive thinkers like you!
You don’t want people around you to say yes to everything you suggest:
“Oh, you are so great.”
Trusted friends won’t always slap you on the back and tout your virtues.
They can, however, be very helpful as your harshest critics.
Paw-Paw always commented that those most interested in your personal growth and business life are those most interested in you--mentors who can point out your weaknesses, help you develop that area of your life and create strength.

We all need a coach.
No one lives in a bubble.
We need an open mind to seek out those with wisdom, like Paw-Paw. Often it takes “life experiences” and the loss of someone who gave tough love to look back and realize:
“Wow, I learned so much from him or her.”
Unfortunately, most of us forget and can’t accept coaching from someone with the initials L.E. behind their names.

George Foreman, the former, two-time, heavy-weight boxing champion and sports commentator for HBO, became the oldest man to ever win the heavyweight championship of the world.
His second time came many years after winning the first title in the early 1970s. He had a saying that went like this:
“All of us are like blind men at some point in our lives … standing on the corner, waiting for someone to help us across.”
George would continue:
“I have learned to say, ‘I don’t know what to do or say, so help me.’”
George learned a lot over the years, transitioned from big strong man in the early 70s, to master salesman and motivational speaker today—from bully to teddy bear.
George made the choice to hang around different people.
He became a different person.
With the power of positive thinking he became the “oldest heavyweight champion of the world.”
Acknowledge when a relationship sours.
Go your separate way.
No arguments, just a difference in values and goals.
Paw-Paw taught me that breaking away from friendships that drag you down is not bad, because a true friend assists to lift you up.

One day you will retire. When that day comes you will either have what you want or not.
That decision will be yours and yours alone.
Your neighbors, family and friends will no answers for you then.
You will have either done the right things for your family or not.

Take 15 minutes off today and sit in a quiet space:
“Would Mom and Dad, Paw-Paw, Maw-Maw and my children be proud of me today?
Did I really give it all I had?”
