Publicist Contemplates Suit vs Promoter Bobby Bostick
      7/31/07 - RR Media Blitz
Reputable publicist Rob Russen figures he has waited long enough to be paid for services rendered to boxing promoter Bobby Bostick and Bobby Bostick Promotions. Bostick, who boasted during one of the press release interviews he did with Russen that he would spend "$6 million" to protect his promotional rights to IBF Welterweight Champion Kermit Citron...

Thad Spencer & Castillo Chucho 2
      7/31/07 - Jim Amato
At one time he was the most prominent heavyweight in the world beside of the deposed Muhammad Ali and streaking Olympic Gold Medalist Joe Frazier. He was the favorite to win the hastily put togetherWBA elimination tourney that was set up to find a successor to the alleged draft dodger Ali.
***
He lost his professional debut in 1962 but he would go on to later win the bantamweight title and be a major force for several years. Jesus " Chucho " Castillo rebounded from that initial loss to win fourteen straight.

In Rusty's Corner
      7/30/07 - Rusty Rubin
On Aug. 4, in Chicago, two real scrappers get it on, when David Diaz takes on Erik Morales. Erik hasn’t looked right in recent times, perhaps getting just a bit long in the tooth. This fight figures to be well worth the PPV price of $44.95.

Gomez finishes Gatti.
      7/23/07 - Mike Indri
Cintron crushes Mathysse in two round blowout!
To the dismay of the 9,437 faithful fans that once again transformed Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall into "Arturo Gatti's backyard", Alfonso Gomez, a supposed perfect opponent due to his lighter punching, pounded the New Jersey legend throughout the surprisingly one-sided bout, putting an end to the career of one of the most beloved and cherished fighters - of this, or any era.

Jack O'Halloran & Borkhorsor 2
      7/26/07 - Jim Amato
As Muhammad Ali ruled the heavyweight division in the mid 60's, white hope contenders came and went. Henry Cooper, George Chuvalo and Karl Mildenberger all were vanquished by the "Greatest".
***
There was a good little southpaw out of Thailand in the early 1970's named Venice Borkhorsor. He won the flyweight title and then met Rafael Herrera for the bantamweight title. It was a WAR !

In Rusty's Corner
      7/25/07 - Rusty Rubin
It’s good to see that Terry and Tommy Lane have inherited the boxing bug from their famous referee father. On July 6th they put on a solid fight card that featured Jesse Brinkley who scored an 11th round TKO over a tough foe. Keep up the good work, and we’ll be in your corner.

Pawel Wolak crushes another one!
      7/24/07 - Mike Indri
Impressive knockout thrills Atlantic City crowd.
While Arturo Gatti's decisive loss Saturday night essentially ended the career of a revered and beloved New Jersey boxing legend, Polish-born Pawel Wolak's promising career continues to rise at a meteoric pace.

Henry Clark & Gatti
      7/24/07 - Jim Amato
There were many who thought he was going to be the next Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali. He was a tall, smooth boxing heavyweight with a world of potential. His professional career began in 1964 and before long he was mixing it up with some of the best fighters in the world.
***
Arturo is probably my favorite boxer active today. What tremendous fights he has given boxing fans. The trilogy with Mickey Ward and his wars with Wilson Rodriguez and Gabe Ruelas, etc... He is a warrior in every sense of the word.

GEORGE GETTING READY FOR A NIGHT WITH EL TERRIBLE
      7/18/07 - Cestus Press
Cestus Management’s 168-pound battering-ram, Donovan George, is hitting on all cylinders as he is currently in preparation for the biggest stage of his career: Fighting on the same promotion as Mexican ring legend Erik “El Terrible” Morales.

Benson: Answering questions about Nichols fight
      7/17/07 - The Town Talk
Alexandria boxer Heath Nichols has a strong fan base in Central Louisiana.
The fact that he is fighting for a world title after just five professional bouts has spurred many questions from readers. Nichols, 5-0, will box for the National Boxing Association's junior world lightweight title Saturday against Donnell Logan at the Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder.

A good night, for a great cause
      7/16/07 - Mike Indri

Cleveland's Chuck Wilburn & Ortiz-DeJesus
      7/16/07 - Jim Amato
He was a good prospect out of Cleveland in the early 70's. The fortunes of Chuck Wilburn looked bright when he turned pro in 1970. He lost his second fight to Mike Harris but he stopped Harris in a rematch.

How do they keep turning out such great fighters ? Jose Torres, Felix Trinidad and now Miguel Cotto and Kermit Cintron. Puerto Rico has put their stamp on the fistic map !
In the forty years I've followed the great sport of boxing I've seen two lightweights that were not only Puerto Rican standouts but in my opinion among the greatest lightweights of all time.

Henry Crawford continues his winning ways!
      7/15/07 - Mike Indri
Unbeaten welterweight prospect annihilates hapless foe.
It took talented Henry Crawford just thirty five seconds to dispose of lightly regarded Fort Smith, Arkansas native Josh Hammock, on the non-televised portion of the Arturo Gatti-Alfonso Gomez undercard Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Oscar " Shotgun " Albarado & Pete Mead
      7/15/07 - Jim Amato
He was a hard banger and a crowd pleaser who battled some of the best welterweights of his era. Eventually he would move up to 154 pounds and win a world title in that division. He thrilled crowds in his home state of Texas and would also become a popular draw on the West Coast.
***
One of the toughest and most respected middleweight contenders of the 1940's passed away recently. Pete Mead died on July 2nd. He was 83 years old. Mead began his 56 fight professional career in 1942.

Nichols' ready for the fight
      7/14/07 - The Town Talk
Heath Nichols stepped on the scales Friday and breathed a deep sigh of relief when his weight was announced at 134 pounds.
Donnell Logan's reaction was much the same about 90 minutes later when his weight was recorded at 134.9 pounds.
Nichols, an Alexandria boxer who is 5-0 as a pro, and Logan, who is from Covington, Tenn., will fight today for the National Boxing Association's vacant junior world lightweight championship at the Coushatta Casino Resort.

Nichols' opponent talking tough
      7/12/07 - The Town Talk
Malcolm Terry, the trainer of boxer Donnell Logan, has a warning for fans of Alexandria boxer Heath Nichols.
"I know a lot of people think this fight is a mismatch," Terry said. "I agree. I think this fight is a mismatch. I don't think Heath will be able to last more than two rounds against my guy."

FROM ZYDECO MUSICIAN TO PROFESSIONAL BOXER
      7/10/07 - Tom Dodge
SCYPION FOLLOWS HIS DREAMS AND HIS FATHERS.
Wilford Scypion Jr. has two great legacies in his family tree.
On his mother’s side is grandfather L. C. Donatto, the late zydeco legend who was born and raised in Opelousas, LA before moving to Houston at age 18.
On the other side is father, Wilford Scypion Sr., who was one of the best middleweight boxers in the 1980s.

SHOOT0UT AT COUSHATTA CASINO, An interview with David Rivas
      7/8/07 - Tom Dodge
David Rivas made history in 1999 when he became the first Native American boxing promoter in the state of Louisiana.
Rivas, 41, will make history again on July 14 at Coushatta Casino Resort when there are two world title fights on the same card – Shootout at Coushatta.

Two title fights on tap for upcoming 'Shootout at Coushatta'
      7/7/07 - Eric Cormier
There's a new promoter, but the expectations are the same as Grand Casino Coushatta will host another boxing promotion that includes two championship fights sponsored by a lower tier fight organization next week.
Instead of using the past slogan of "Knockouts At Coushatta" the production has been coined "Shootout at Coushatta" and will take place July 14 at the casino resort's arena.

Roy Jones: "I'll take care of Hanshaw-then its Tito!"
      7/6/07 - Mike Indri
July 14th PPV a prelude to Jones-Trinidad Mega fight.
While a bit difficult to hear over Tuesday's jumbled conference call, the legendary Roy Jones Jr. did apparently at least, sound like the Roy Jones of old, rather than simply an old Roy Jones.

Tito... & Jose Luis Garcia
      7/6/07 - Jim Amato
If...Felix Trinidad does decide to return to ring wars, how much impact will he have on the current state of the game ?
***
Lost among the giants of that time period was a fine heavyweight from Venezuela named Jose Luis Garcia. Although Jose never challenged for the world championship he did meet three who did.

“Shoot Out at Coushatta.”
      7/2/07 - Tom Dodge
There was a buzz in the room much like a preseason football press conference with reporters waiting for every comment from the head coach.
After nearly three decades as an editor in the newspaper business, I had witnessed that scene many times before.
But this time it was different. As the newly appointed publicist for Keeppunching Entertainment, I was involved in helping organize the media blitz for Alexandria’s Heath Nichols upcoming NBA Junior World Lightweight Championship.
