In Rusty's Corner
6/22/06 - Rusty Rubin
Baby Joe Mesi makes takes his second comeback fight since his return to the ring in Quebec on Friday.
Although he won has last fight, Mesi showed plenty of ring rust and impressed no one...This time
he takes on Daniel Frank, so you can expect him to win and impress no one again. |

I really hate to bring this up but did anyone but me
notice that both Golden Boy (Oscar deLaHoya) and Top
Rank (Bob Arum) held shows on the same day within a
stones throw of each other and both were "Boffo" at
the box office. Hopkins-Tarver in Atlantic City did
10,200 in a venue who's best sightline is lousy. |

Chairman: State boxing thriving
6/19/06 - Daily Advertiser
Watching all the tasks that Embanato and his commission
members toil with every time there's a professional card in the state, as in last Saturday's
card at Blackham Coliseum, makes one realize that at least one state commission more than
earns its pay. Daily Advertiser senior sports writer Dan McDonald followed Embanato for
much of the past weekend, and sat down during a rare Saturday break to talk about the
commission and the sport. |

IBU title may be vacated
6/19/06 - Dan McDonald
Homer Gibbins has the International Boxing Union's welterweight title. What he doesn't have is the belt.
And he may not have that title for long, according to IBU chairman Moose Lewis.
A verbal altercation following Gibbins' Saturday night victory over Lafayette's Chad Broussard put the Atlanta,
Ga., fighter's status atop the IBU rankings in question. |

Broussard takes vicious hit in loss
6/19/06 - Dan McDonald
It was far from the ending that Chad Broussard had envisioned.
On all fours, looking at the canvas, with no chance of beating referee Russell Naquin's count,
in front of a shocked crowd of 3,000 that had come to Blackham Coliseum to see their hometown
favorite defend his International Boxing Union welterweight title. |

Gibbins turns table on Broussard

Aucoin takes IBU's U.S. junior welterweight title.
The "Do Or Die" rematch between "Bad" Chad Broussard and Homer Gibbins Saturday looked a lot like the
pair's first bout - until Gibbins uncorked two right hands to the body.
The first came at the end of the second round of their International Boxing Union world welterweight bout
at Blackham Coliseum, and floored Broussard for an eight-count. |

BAYOU BOMBER WINS IBU USA JR WELTER TITLE
6/18/06 - Kerry Daigle
The 'Do or Die' boxing show promoted by Big Punch Promotions, LLC was a huge
success for promoter Bryan Culotta as far as good attendance and exciting competition. This live
boxing show was on the same night as the Pay-Per-View boxing match featuring Jermain Taylor vs
Winky Wright, an amateur boxing show only 3 miles away and Father's Day being on the next day,
Sunday, June 18th. That still brought in a crowd of 2500 to 3000 with all 45 $1000 tables
sold out. Sadly, the main event featuring local hero, Chad Broussard, ended quickly. |

Aucoin gets his chance to win an IBU title
6/14/06 - Dan McDonald
It's been almost overshadowed by the intrigue of a main-event rematch, but Scott's Bobby "The Bayou Bomber"
Aucoin has a title fight of his own Saturday night.
Aucoin, undefeated with one draw in his 17 professional outings, will be gunning for the International
Boxing Union's U.S. junior welterweight title as part of a five-bout pro boxing card Saturday at
Blackham Coliseum. Aucoin will square off with Donnell Logan of Covington, Tenn., in the co-main event. |

Duplechain hopes to atone for February loss
Jeremy Duplechain (5-2, 4 KOs) lost his last fight in February and is in a "Do or Die" situation
heading into the rematch with Steve Verdin of Cut Off, who gave him the first of his two pro losses.
"I have a lot to prove to myself," Duplechain said. "I want to show everybody the real fighter I really am.
"For me it is on the line," he admitted. "If I don't perform in this fight, I am stepping out." |

In Rusty's Corner
6/14/06 - Rusty Rubin
Future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins took a unanimous decision from Antonio Tarver, which shouldn't have
been a shock to anyone, and certainly not the decision part. Neither Tarver or BHop are big punchers
and both have pretty solid chins, so the outcome of a 12-round victory for one or the other seemed logical. |

PROFESSIONAL BOXING
6/13/06 - Kerry Daigle
Lafayette, LA......Will Chad Broussard retain his IBU World Welterweight Championship belt on June 17?
What happens this time if the fight goes the 12 round distance? If the fight is close again,
will Broussard get the decision? Can Gibbins win a decision in Lafayette? Will there be a knockout?
If there is a knockout who will be on the receiving end?. |

Lawtell's Prevost not ready to leave fate in judges' hands
LAWTELL - He still remembers the controversial loss to Martin Verdin in his last time in the
ring at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette.
Now Blake "The Candyman" Prevost wants every one to remember Saturday's scheduled six-round bout
against an opponent yet to be determined. |

Boxing boasts resurgence
6/11/06 - Dan McDonald
Lafayette moves into role as state's 'capital of boxing.'
It may not be by one of the most recognized sanctioning bodies, but Lafayette is about to host its second
world boxing championship bout in less than five months. |

Tommy Z and Irish John Duddy also thrill the 14,369 at MSG!
NEW YORK - Having to compete against the Bernard Hopkins - Antonio Tarver showdown in Atlantic
City didn't faze the near sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden, which turned the hallowed halls
of boxing's Mecca a sea of red, white and blue with Puerto Rican flags honoring their beloved
Miquel Cotto, the undefeated WBO Jr. Welterweight champion, who was taking on New York's own
Paul "The Magic Man" Malignaggi. |

IN BOXING MENTAL BEATS PHYSICAL MANY TIMES
6/11/06 - Kerry Daigle
Boxing is not only about getting in great physical condition and understanding the technical
aspects of boxing. The key ingredient most of the time is the mental edge a fighter has over
another. How strong is the mind going into a professional match. |

TALKIN BOXIN
6/11/06 - Howie Reed
The Corrales-Castillo mess is just the latest
manifestation of the dysfunctional nature of the
current boxing scene. What is even more troubling is
trying to find out what actually happened and why ?

In Rusty's Corner
6/07/06 - Rusty Rubin
Don't ask me to explain why a fighter like Jose Luis Castillo couldn't make weight for an important fight
with Diego Corrales. He didn't even come close and the fight was called off, leaving a lot of people very
angry, including Castillo's promoter Bob Arum. |

PAYOFFS, POLITICIANS, AND BOXING
6/04/06 - Howie Reed
There has always been a connection between the
business of politics and the sport of boxing. They're
similar as there is usually a winner and a looser, the
better person is suppose to win but sometimes doesn't
and public acceptance is necessary for success. In
addition politico's seem to get "their jollies" by
being associated with boxers. |

Boxing showcase heading to Pasadena
6/01/06 - Jennifer Branch
The Pasadena Convention Center on Fairmont Parkway is full to the brim: families, businesspeople,
husbands and wives, fathers and sons, old high school buddies, teenagers. The lights are low,
and all of the energy pulsing through the crowd is fixated on the ring in the middle of the
auditorium, flooded in lights. Spectators explode into cheers when the boxers come bounding
out of their locker rooms. The event is so large, tickets have been sold out for two weeks. |
