12/14/06 - BRIAN SKJOLD ![]() 12 Rounds with REGGIE "Sweet" JOHNSON THU OCTOBER 6, BRIAN SKJOLD - In the aftermath of Jones-Tarver, the light heavyweight division seems to be top heavy with veterans. Add to that the recent comeback of Reggie “Sweet” Johnson and the 175lb limit is now home to some of the sports’ most experienced fighters. At 39 years old Reggie Johnson has been in with some of the best competition the sport has to offer, during his reigns as both middleweight and light heavyweight champ. When looking back on his career the first thing that jumps out is that in 7 career losses, 4 of them came by split decision, against fighters like James Toney and Antonio Tarver. In lieu of the fact that he dropped a split decision to Tarver in 2002, there’s no reason to believe that Johnson can’t be competitive with this aging group of warriors. So, sit back and enjoy the fight, as we go 12 Rounds with Reggie “Sweet” Johnson! Round 1: TalkingBoxing: As a fan, who do you think is the most entertaining fighter in boxing right now? Reggie Johnson: Floyd Mayweather Jr. Round 2: TalkingBoxing: As a fan, who do you think is the most talented fighter in boxing right now? Reggie Johnson: Floyd Mayweather Jr. He's the most well rounded fighter in the game today. His defense matches his offense. I vote him pound for pound the best as we speak. Round 3: TalkingBoxing: If you weren’t a fighter, then what would you be? And why? Reggie Johnson: Probably football. It was my first love up until I was 12. That’s when my uncle Kenneth "Ironman" Walker introduced me to boxing and to my boxing coach Mr. James Carter. “Ironman” was a good boxer himself. Round 4: TalkingBoxing: Who is or was you favorite fighter of all time? And why? Reggie Johnson: Ali was my favorite because he used his GOD given talent and wit to shed light and attention on racism and he spoke on behalf of the people. He said the things they wanted to say but were scared to speak on the issues that kept them down as a people. He brought people together and gave them hope. Round 5: TalkingBoxing: Who is your favorite boxing broadcaster? Reggie Johnson: Jim Lampley Round 6: TalkingBoxing: If you could fight one boxer from any era who would it be? And why? Reggie Johnson: Bob Foster. He was considered the best Light Heavyweight. And Marvin Hagler. He was the best Middleweight of my time. I held both the 175lb and 160lb World Titles. Round 7: TalkingBoxing: What is your favorite food? Reggie Johnson: Cajun Round 8: TalkingBoxing: What do you like to do outside of boxing? Reggie Johnson: Due to boxing I've seen a lot of the World and yearn to explore and see more of it. I love to TRAVEL. Round 9: TalkingBoxing: What is your favorite professional sports team? Reggie Johnson: Dallas Cowboys Round 10: TalkingBoxing: Who do you think is the most influential person in the sport of boxing today? Why? Reggie Johnson: See #4 ALI Round 11: TalkingBoxing: Who do you prefer HBO or Showtime? Reggie Johnson: I won my first World Title on Showtime (WBA 160lb Title), and my light heavyweight World Title on HBO (IBF 175lb World Title). Both have been good to me, but if you were to twist my arm and make me pick one it would be HBO. I like Jim Lampley and Big George Foreman’s work. Round 12: TalkingBoxing: Where do you think the real Mecca of boxing is, Las Vegas or New York? Why? Reggie Johnson: Back in the day of Sugar Ray Robinson and the other great fighters it was New York but in this day and time it’s Las Vegas. Talkingboxing would like to extend their thanks to both Reggie Johnson and Tim Mousel for all their time and effort in making this happen. |
