Taking care of business
Lawtell's Prevost not ready to leave fate in judges' hands

LAWTELL - He still remembers the controversial loss to Martin Verdin in his last time in the ring at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette.

Now Blake "The Candyman" Prevost wants every one to remember Saturday's scheduled six-round bout against an opponent yet to be determined.

Lawtell's Prevost (7-1-1, 4 KOs) and many others thought he had won the fight against Verdin, but the 2-1 split vote by the judges gave the win to Verdin.
Prevost said he learned a lot from that fight, especially when it is decided by those outside the ring.

"I learned not to trust the judges," he said. "Every fight you learn something and I learned not to take anything for granted. I need to win the fight myself and not leave it in anyone else's hands."

Prevost said he has put that loss behind him and is more than ready to fight Saturday.

"I wouldn't want to be in the other corner Saturday night," Prevost's manager Kerry Daigle said. "I wouldn't fight Blake right now. He is focused, determined and he will see the three judges and Verdin when he looks across that ring."

"This fight is very important to me," Prevost said. "I am treating this as if it is a title fight because every fight is one step closer to fighting for the world title.

"I love boxing," he said, "but I am fighting to be world champion."

Prevost said his team around him, including Daigle and trainers Termite Watkins and John Stutes, has been the key to him being successful as a professional inside and outside the ring.

"I am progressing like I want," Prevost said of his nine-fight pro career. "I am becoming a better fighter."

"He can box, he can fight you inside and he can do whatever he needs to do," Daigle said of Prevost's ability in the ring.

"He is like a lumberjack chopping a tree down," the promoter continued. "The tree doesn't fall on the first whack, but you keep at it and eventually the tree falls.

"Blake is that kind of fighter," Daigle said. "He is just going to wear you out."

The main event Saturday will be the rematch of the IBU World Welterweight Championship over 12 rounds with defending champion "Bad" Chad Broussard (54-4 with 39 KO's) against Homer Gibbins (43-14 with 30 KO's) from Atlanta, Ga.

The co-main event will feature the undefeated sensation Bobby "The Bayou Bomber" Aucoin (16-0-1 with 8 KO's) in his 18th professional fight and in an IBU U.S. junior welterweight championship bout.

In another highly anticipated rematch, Martin "Smiley" Verdin of Dulac (11-6-1 with 6 KO's) will face the more experienced Anthony "Untouchable" Stephens of Shreveport (32-18-2 with 17 KO's).

Prevost's cousin from Lawtell, Jeremy "The Crusader" Duplechain (5-2, 4 KO's) has a rematch with Steve Verdin of Cut Off, who gave him one of his two pro losses.

"I love fighting at Blackham," Prevost said of the event that is expected to draw more than 6,000 fans from around Acadiana, including a large fan base from St. Landry Parish.

"It motivates me more when I fight here," he said. "No one wants to get knocked out in front of mama."
