A True Rocky Story

Lafayette/Alexandria……………..On May 12th at the Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, Louisiana a professional boxing show will transpire that could potentially change the direction of one of two fighters in the main event. Juan De la Rosa, a former fighter from THE CONTENDER series television show produced by Sylvester Stallone and Sugar Ray Leonard, with a professional record of 17 wins, 1 defeat, and 1 draw, will face a fighter with a losing record, Mikel Williams. Williams owns a record of only 7 wins against 18 defeats with 4 draws. How can this be a main event you ask?

Very simple. De la Rosa’s only loss has come at the hands of Mikel Williams. Williams did not only beat De la Rosa but stopped him inside of 8 rounds in the hometown area of the Mexican born prospect on De la Rosa’s promoter’s show. This was the former Contender fighter’s first and only loss. Since that loss De la Rosa knocked out an 11-1 fighter named Victor Lares. How can that be you ask? How did he lose to Williams?

Well, Williams is the true Rocky story. He can fight. Sure, he only has 7 wins but let’s take a look at who he’s beaten. When Marteze Logan, a true warrior who has been upsetting good Class A fighters (had a winning record of 6 wins against only 1 controversial loss) Williams stepped up and defeated Logan. He then traveled to Houston, Texas to take on undefeated Jose Gutierrez and not only defeats the young Hispanic fighter but knocks Gutierrez out in his hometown. Williams was offered a rematch a year later with Gutierrez with only a 4 day notice and wins a unanimous decision. Then enters another undefeated fighter, De la Rosa, and Williams wins again by knockout. This comes after De la Rosa wins two tough fights on THE CONTENDER series but then has to leave the show due to injuries.

If you look at Williams record and his 4 draws against favored fighters you could actually say he won those fights depending on who you speak to. Add in at least 5 other fights that were extremely controversial and could have gone Williams way you would have a fighter with a record of 16 wins against 13 losses, all of which were extremely competitive fights against very tough opponents on their home turf. Add in the fact Williams has taken many fights with less than 7 days notice, some as little as 1 day.

This fight is being offered to both fighters with enough time to train for each one to make a statement. This fight can prove that Williams is as good as he was in the amateurs winning major titles and give him the “fire” for him to move forward and make things happen in his career.

De la Rosa, on the other hand, must win to continue to be looked at as a future prospect having won two fights on THE CONTENDER series and looked at as a ‘media darling’ before having to leave with injuries to his hands. De la Rosa was touted to win the entire series by many boxing experts. Now, he must travel to Louisiana where Williams is from to prove he is for real and can be a real contender for a world championship.

In reality, this fight could be labeled as the ‘FIGHT OF THE YEAR’ should it be on television, but television would not give Williams that sort of opportunity because of his record. Enter, Keeppunching Entertainment, a female promoter by the name of Mickey Daigle, and the Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, Louisiana to make this a ‘must win’ WAR being promoted right behind the well promoted De la Hoya/Mayweather fight.

Boxing will be buzzing in the month of May. De la Hoya and Mayweather will get all the ink but down in little known Cajun Country a ‘big’ fight with lots of fireworks will happen and fight fans attending will remember the results for a long time.

Both fighters will be available at two press conferences. Wednesday, April 18th at 12 noon at Copeland’s Restaurant in Alexandria and Thursday, April 19th at 1pm at Copeland’s in Lafayette. You will see THE CONTENDER fighter with all the fanfare and the skills to be champion but you will not see Sylvester Stallone. Instead you will see the real ROCKY in Mikel Williams. Something else you will see is FIREWORKS at the PRESS CONFERENCE before the ‘big fight’ on May 12th. A crossroads fight for both boxers. Add in the fact that these two guys don’t like each other. Both are predicting ‘clean’ knockouts. States De la Rosa, “You won’t need a referee for this one. I will not only win but win by a clean knockout.” Williams, on the other hand, says De la Rosa is half right. “There will be a knockout….again….and this time I will hurt De la Rosa,” concludes Williams.

Also, at the press conference you will meet BOBBY ‘THE BAYOU BOMBER’ AUCOIN fighting the co-main event over 8 rounds and looking for next win in his 20th fight and remain undefeated. Aucoin, who has moved up to Junior Welterweight in his last 4 fights, has ended his last 4 fights by knockout inside of 4 rounds. He is the former United States IBU Jr Welterweight Champion. Aucoin gave up the title to seek another championship by the year’s end. ShoBox and HBO Boxing After Dark are looking at Aucoin for a future fight.

Also on the card is:

Daniel Garcia 4 rounds Jr Welterweight from Houston, Texas. Dwight Jarmon, 4 rounds Heavyweight from Houston, Texas. Wilford Scypion, JR, 4 rounds, Middlweight, Houston, Texas. Michael Martinez, 4 rounds, Jr Middleweight, Snyder, Texas.
Interestingly, all 4 rounders will feature pure punchers who are ‘come forward’ fighters looking for knockouts.
