In Rusty’s Corner
By Rusty Rubin, Managing Editor of Ringsports.com
So, 46 year old Hector “Macho” Camacho Junior fought a main event draw with Yori Boy Campas, over 8 rounds, in Atlantic City.
Who cares? If you do, why? I thought Campas won an easy decision, but that’s why I’m a boxing writer, not a boxing judge.
If this fight was a main event, I ask how it ever got sanctioned.
I know there are rules against age discrimination, but those rules can easily be covered by not allowing them to fight because of ‘diminished skills’?
I’m not a doctor, but I do know that when an athlete reaches forty years of age or more, his skills are diminished to varying degrees.
Both fighters were outstanding in their hey-day, but that hey-day has long since past.
The easier fight to call was at least competitive on paper, between Bad Chad Dawson and Antonio (now past 40) Tarver. For the record it was not competitive either. Dawson won an easy unanimous decision. ***
This week we venture to Oracle Arena in the San Francisco Bay Area for an intriguing match between 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward taking on very talented Edison Miranda.
Ward, 25, 18-0, 12 KO’s, is fighting in his hometown against by far his toughest foe to date. Besides having the hometown edge, Ward is taller by three inches but faces a foe with a 4 ½” longer reach.
Miranda, 28, 32-3 (28), is a native of Colombia and although he lost three bouts, two of them came against Arthur Abraham and the other against Kelly Pavlik, nothing at all to be ashamed of.
This fight will be held on May 16th and featured on Sho-Box TV.
This is a fight worth watching folks.
My guess is that Miranda will need a knockout to win, and that’s my pick on this weekend’s card. Miranda by late stoppage. ***
